A Brief Introduction to School & Hospital of Stomatology Wenzhou Medical University

School & Hospital of Stomatology, Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) was established in 2002. It adopts a school - hospital integrated management system.

The Hospital of Stomatology, WMU is the first provincial-level public specialized dental hospital in Southern Zhejiang, which undertakes medical treatment, education, scientific research, transfer and public welfare. The hospital is a national-level standardized training base for resident physicians, the first-batch standardized clinical training base for resident physician in Zhejiang Province, Vice-President Unit of Zhejiang Stomatological Association and Presidential Unit of Wenzhou Stomatological Association. All together, Hospital of Stomatology has 6 annexes, which are Longwan Headquarters, Xueyuan Road Branch, Guangchang Road Branch, Ouhai Branch, Jiangbin Branch and 5050 Branch. The first phase of the construction occupies 3.6 million square meters. There are over 600 faculty members and 90% of them have Doctor’s or Master's degree. At present, Hospital of Stomatology possesses over 278 dental units and 80 hospital beds.

School of Stomatology is one of the first-batch schools with accreditation by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China as well as one of the first group of schools in China being qualified to admit foreign students an undergraduate program in Dentistry with English as the language of instruction. The major Oral Medicine was authorized with National First-Level Master Degree Program and Professional Master Degree Program. It started its five–year undergraduate programs since 2000.Currently, the school has formed an all–around, multiple-level and high-standard talent development system, ranging from Undergraduate to Master’s Program, full-time education to continuing education and domestic student education to international student education. The school also conducts a Master’s Degree Joint Program with University of Alberta, Canada. The average score and passing rate of WMU graduates of Chinese Doctor’s License Examination ranks TOP among all the dental progress in China. Major Stomatology is shortlisted as one of the first batch of Zhejiang characteristics of Emerging Majors (international) establishment and construction, Dominant Major of Zhejiang 13th Five-Year Plan, Zhejiang Provincial First-class Undergraduate Discipline, Key Discipline of Wenzhou, Provincial Key Discipline and Provincial First-class Discipline (B Category). Furthermore, Central Lab of Stomatology is elected as Wenzhou Colleges and Universities’ Demonstration Central Lab and Wenzhou Key Laboratory. Prominent academician Qiu Weiliu and Professor Wang Huiming are serving as Dean Advisories. Academician Zhang Zhiyuan is appointed as the Director of Institute of Stomatology and Academician Li Xiaokun as the Director of Scientific Research Cooperation Center. Some professors and experts have been enrolled as fellows of International College of Dentists and honorably awarded or appointed by Zhejiang provincial government or Wenzhou municipal government, such as Provincial 151 Talents Program, Provincial Excellent Youth and Municipal 551 Talents Program, for their innovative contributions and the leading roles they play in a particular field of subject. The school has obtained 1 National Virtual Simulation Program, 2 Provincial Simulation Program and 1 Provincial Paradigmatic Course. It has undertaken over 290 scientific research projects, among which there are 83 national and provincial level scientific research projects and 43 authorized utility patents. Our scientific research projects have received many awards for scientific advancement including 3 Third Prize of Zhejiang Science & Technology Progress Award and 2 Second Prize of Zhejiang Medical & Health Science Award.

As Wenzhou Designated Unit of Charity Medical Assistance, School & Hospital of Stomatology, WMU keeps engaging in promoting wellbeing and charity activities all the time. With the help of charitable agencies and people home and abroad, ‘Smile Program’, a program provides free treatment and rehabilitation to children with Cleft Lip and Palate from impoverished families, has been highly recognized with a number of national honors including the People’s Well-being Project by Central United Front Work Department, China Charity Outstanding Award and The Most Influential Team by World Wenzhou People's Congress. School & Hospital of Stomatology was also awarded as one of Zhejiang Prominent Volunteer Groups for vigorously launching ‘Gleaming Teeth Project’, propaganda and education of oral health knowledge and public welfare activity of ‘Mobile Hospital of Stomatology in communities Program’.

School & Hospital of Stomatology, WMU embraces internationalization in the course of its development. It has established long-lasting partnerships with education and research institutions including Loma Linda University, University of the Pacific, University of Washington, The University of Queensland, University of Alberta, Tokyo Dental College, Hong Kong University, Hungary Semmelweis University, Medical University of Lublin, Korea Chonnam National University, Korea Chosun University, Thailand Chiang Mai University, the Foundation of “Alliance for Smiles “and Taiwan “Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation” as well as other well-known dental colleges, universities and institutes. A number of international conferences, meetings and seminars have been held by our school & hospital to create an international platform for academic exchange and sharing.
